Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, (UCBM) is a young, rapidly developing, private academic institution, devoted to undergraduate and postgraduate education and advanced research. Established in 1992. Today the University runs the Department of Medicine and Surgery, the Department of Engineering (degree in “Industrial Engineering”, “Biomedical Engineering”, “Chemical Engineering for the Sustainable Development”), and the PhD in “Bioengineering and Biosciences”, “Science and Engineering for Humans and Environment” and “Integrated Biomedical Sciences and Bioetics”. Moreover, the Centre for Integrated Research, the Institute of Philosophy of Scientific and Technological Practice, the Campus Bio-Medico Hospital and the Centre for the Health of the Elderly are also associated to the University. The Centre for Integrated Research provides support to the Department of Medicine and Surgery and to the Department of Engineering for promotion, exploitation and administrative management of the research activities. It guarantees the proper management of funds for research activities, publications and scientific collaborations; it also ensures a correct execution of clinical trials according to relevant regulations, Good Clinical Practice and the Joint Commission International’s standards. The Departments of Engineering and Medicine and Surgery include 48 Research Units. Notably, the number of scientific publications, has grown over the past five years and has confirmed in 2016 a level, both in qualitative and quantitative terms, comparable to that of the best Italian universities, in relation to the size of the University and to the number of faculty members. In particular normalized impact factor is greater than 2000, about 70% of publications is in the first quartile according to SCImago ranking, and 18% of the faculty staff in the Top Italian Scientists. 50 projects are currently on-going funded by competitive calls, both public and private, of national and international agencies and third-party financing contracts. In particular, UCBM has 4 ongoing projects funded by European Commission and has managed more than 15 projects in FP6, FP7 and other EU Programmes. More than 200 collaborations with national and international universities, research centers, GIs and PMI are also ongoing. Moreover, UCBM is owner/co-owner of 19 patents families and three companies have been recognized as spin-offs by the University. Finally, core facilities, e.g. laboratory for microscopy, laboratory for cell culture and clean room, are available at the UCBM premises and set-up of additional core facilities for biology research, molecular diagnostic and medical genetics is currently ongoing.
