The Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, is the main Italian institute of orthopaedics and traumatology. In 1981, the Italian Health Ministry gave Rizzoli Institute the status of ‘Scientific Research Hospital’ due both to its high level of healthcare in orthopaedics and its commitment toward basic and clinical research. In fact, the Institute’s strengths lies in the close integration between healthcare (about 150,000 patients examined and over 20,000 surgical procedures performed every year) and scientific research, which is carried out in fifteen laboratories, employing a staff of more than 300 individuals, including medical doctors, biologists
and technicians. Rizzoli Institute has 327 beds in total and is among the biggest orthopaedic facilities in Italy and Europe. Patients come from all over the country and even from abroad. There is a staff of about 1,400 people to support all the clinical activities. Furthermore, Rizzoli Institute has also an outstanding international reputation as an education centre, having introduced many innovative procedures that are transferred to orthopaedic surgeons by means of dedicated courses and training. Also in this sense, one of the principal interests of our Institute is translational research to bring novel solutions from the lab directly to the clinical setting: to this purpose there is a strong interaction among basic scientists and orthopaedic surgeons to favour the development of innovative products.
